History and Social Studies

The social studies disciplines as taught the School are based on the national curriculum and include subjects like the history of Russia, world history and Social Studies.

The content of the abovementioned subjects has been compiled using modern textbooks, published documents and domestic and foreign periodicals in history, politics, sociology, economics, law and philosophy. Lesson content in senior forms is geared towards social studies entrance exams to the leading domestic HEEs and MIFL. In conjunction with the School’s concept of offering a broad range of subjects, we are at present designing a home tuition social studies curriculum.

In the senior forms lessons are conducted in the forms of lectures and seminars adapted for secondary schools and in this way paving the way for pupils to adapt easier to the forms and methods used in higher education. Special attention in the presenation of humanities subjects is paid to developing in pupils the abilities and skills of independent cognitive activity to reinforce the quality of the information they have received from the rote levels to those of creative thinking. Support for this approach to the teaching and learning of History and Social Studies is soon to be reflected in the School’s plans to introduce the pupil project work method in order to more fully realize the potential of each pupil. Yet even today completing individual creative tasks orient pupils towards independent solutions to such issues as identifying and analyzing sources of information, determining cause and consequence connections between different events or phenomena of public life, objective scientific evaluations of facts and the compiling of simple and elaborate schemes of the material they have gone through.

Learning of the curriculum material takes into consideration the need to prepare pupils for their Leaving Certificate in the form of the Unified State Exam.

Improving the quality of knowledge shall facilitate the application of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of humanities subjects without losing sight of their individual content. For instance, part of the content in Social Studies allows pupils to formulate a clear systematic idea of the notions of formative and civlisational approaches to researching the laws of social development used modern science of history. In its turn, material covered in History is actively applicable by way of a practical illustration of political, legal, economic and social aspects considered in Social Studies. The study of domestic and world history sheds light on cultural issues which inevitably go in tandem with the content of subjects like Literature and World Art History as well as the full range of natural science disciplines including Geography, Biology, Physics and Chemistry. The introduction in our School of The History of British Civilisation elective has served as a means of perfecting the structure of interdisciplinary connections in the social sciences and the course content uses authentic materials and is taught in English.

Another way for the School to expand the spectrum of extra subjects on offer as part of its curriculum is for pupils to have the opportunity to take electives in World Economics and Politics and Economics of Russia. The course content reflects the entry requirements for the Faculty of Politics at MSIFR.

Modern methods, an individual approach and broad access to a variety of information (including the internet) provide a stable and sufficiently high standard of knowledge in humanities subjects which is regularly demonstrated by our pupils in regional contests and their entry to universities of their choice.
